Our Promise
At Oribe, we are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and providing a safe and inclusive environment for all of our team members and partners who support the brand. We understand and respect our differences and derive strength from the contributions of individuals from all backgrounds and experiences. Last year, we looked inward across all levels of the organization to determine what actions were needed to effect positive change.
Where we stand today
This update is to highlight our dedication to making lasting changes. We understand this is a long journey, but these are the first steps of many toward making a meaningful difference in our communities.
Internal Initiatives
Laying the groundwork for understanding and advocacy within.
We partnered with Whitney Dunlap-Fowler, cultural strategist and founder of Touch of Whit Creative and Insights in Color, to educate our team members, inform our brand strategy and consult on ways to foster diversity, equity and inclusion, internally and externally.
We expanded recruitment efforts by reaching out to diverse hiring websites, as well as HBCUs, to aid in our efforts of creating a corporate culture where all employees are valued and celebrated.
We worked with the Inclusion and Diversity Board of our parent company, Kao, and will provide Unconscious Bias and Understanding Racism trainings for all employees.
We participated in Kao’s virtual series, “Courageous Conversations,” in which team members and subject matter experts discussed their personal experiences as a means of educating the company about racism and injustice.
We are recognizing Juneteenth as a company holiday to provide employees with an opportunity to further educate themselves on the day’s cultural significance.
Stylist Education
Expanding the understanding amongst our stylist and salon network.
We are ensuring that all of our global educators are proficient in styling hair of all textures, and we are continuing to attract and recruit more diverse and multicultural candidates to the Oribe education team.
We expanded our salon education curriculum to include classes on highly textured hair styling and cutting in order to cater to a wider variety of hair types.
We donated proceeds from our digital classes to Color of Change — a nonprofit civil rights advocacy organization dedicated to advancing solutions for racial justice, including fighting for national legislation to eradicate race-based hair discrimination.
Marketing
Amplifying and connecting with diverse voices.
We’ve included models of all hair types and textures in our marketing and social campaigns, and are committed to partnering with more diverse creatives moving forward for all photo and video shoots.
We used our Instagram platform to highlight diverse and multicultural voices within our community throughout the year.
We partnered with Swivel Beauty, an online destination connecting those with textured hair to knowledgeable stylists, where Oribe Global Educator Stacey Ciceron taught a styling class for consumers and stylists during the Black Girl Beauty School education series.
We partnered with Black Beauty Roster for their 2021 BBR Virtual Summit, which brought together leaders, change makers, influencers, and advocates in the beauty industry for a day of discussion and education about advocacy, ally ship and equity in beauty and beyond.
We updated the salon locator tool on Oribe.com to denote Black-owned salons.
