"L.A. Portfolio: The New Capital of Cool"

Town & Country, September 2014
Hair by Peter Gray

Filmmaker, artist and writer Liz Goldwyn served as
Town & Country’s guest editor for the September feature story “L.A. Portfolio: The New Capital of Cool.” Goldwyn and the magazine’s creative team traveled all over Los Angeles to highlight the city’s most creative and influential individuals, including fashion duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. The two designers are photographed with their Rodarte-dressed muses, actress Nathalie Love and model Laura Love, daughters of Vogue editor Lisa Love.

Hairstylist Peter Gray channeled the idea of “modern romance” for the two sets of sisters, who all wore deep side parts. While the Mulleavys have a hint of a bend in their hairstyles, the Loves were given a rope-like twist fastened with a Rodarte barrette at the back of the head.

Get the Look:
1. Prep damp hair with Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray and Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse. Concentrate the mousse through the root area and comb the product through the lengths of the hair to achieve hold and control.
2. Blow-dry the hair and lightly mist with Thick Dry Finishing Spray.
3. For the subtle bend in the hair, use 1 ½-inch curling iron mid-way through the hair’s length to give a slight sense of movement. For the twist in the hair, use a tail comb to create a smooth, sweeping bang. Twist the hair around the side of the head and clip with a barrette.
4. Apply Shine Light Reflecting Spray as a final touch. To enhance a particular section of the hair, Gray suggests using a sheet of paper with a long triangular or rectangular slot cut out of it. Spray at the slot for high-shine without weighing the hair down.
