Nicholas K

New York-based design company Nicholas K was founded by siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz with the intent of dressing sophisticated customers in modern clothing that never goes out of style. We chatted with co-founder and creative director Nicholas about her in-demand garments, where she finds inspiration and her advice for up-and-coming designers.

How did you get your start in design?
It抯 always been my dream to become a designer. Ever since I was young, you could always find me with my sketchpad. I received my formal training at FIT in New York and then Polimoda in Florence, Italy. Upon returning to New York, I was offered a job at DKNY. Over the course of eight years, prior to launching Nicholas K, I worked for various companies such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Nautica, Coach and Calvin Klein in both the women and men抯 design divisions. During that period, I helped launch three new labels.

You founded your brand, Nicholas K, with your brother. What抯 it like working together?
Its great to work with someone you completely trust and depend on. We have very different skill sets and complement each other, so we don抰 even have to delegate duties! Working together came very naturally.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
For me, inspiration is a spontaneous spark that can come from anything卐veryday objects, films, travel or books.

How would you describe the Nicholas K customer?
The Nicholas K customer is someone who is fashion conscious but also understands the importance of function and versatility. Our customer has an appreciation and respect for his or her natural surroundings but thrives in a fast-paced city.

If you could collaborate with any artist or designer, who would it be?
Clemson Clay, Andy Goldsworthy, Werner Herzog

Who are some of your favorite fashion designers?
Haider Ackermann, Dries van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester

How would you describe your personal style?
Urban nomad

Do you have a signature hairstyle? What抯 your hair routine?
I typically leave my hair down, disheveled and natural with a bohemian flair, or I style it into a tousled side braid. As for my hair routine, I always comb conditioner through my hair in the shower and let it sit for a few minutes, then towel dry, brush through it quickly and go. This routine consistently delivers natural, textured bedhead waves.

What抯 your greatest talent outside of designing?
I was a junior national tennis player for years.

What advice would you give young, aspiring designers?
Persistence is a virtue. Keep your feet on the ground and have a sense of humor along the way.
