A Conversation with...

Eliot Lipp

Dubstep is the latest music craze to sweep the nation, with electronic artists like Diplo playing sold-out shows night after night. We talked to Brooklyn-based DJ Eliot Lipp, who is currently touring with Dubstep legend Pretty Lights, about how he got started in music and what it抯 like being on tour. Lipp was recently featured on Jay-Z and Kanye West抯 blog and is also the owner of Old Tacoma Records. Read on to find out more about this multifaceted DJ.

Were you always interested in electronic music?
No, I was mostly into hip-hop. It wasn't until I moved to San Francisco to go to college that I discovered electronic music. Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre and Oval were the first electronic producers that really blew my mind.

How would you describe your music? Your audience?
I usually say that I make electronic music, just to keep it vague since I'm into so many different styles. I guess specifically I would say it's Electro Funk. My audience is usually not your typical ravers. I've got a lot of fans that are into more left field kind of music. I've toured with a lot of live bands, too, so really I see all kinds of people at the shows.

Do you have a signature style?
My style is pretty simple; I like nice jeans and flannel shirts. I've had a lot of different hairstyles over the years, but lately I just try to keep it sharp looking.

In your opinion, how important are hair and clothing to an artist抯 success?
I guess it depends. If you're a pop star like Justin Bieber, then you've really got to work on your hair (click here to read our interview with Justin Bieber抯 stylist, Vanessa Price). But one of the most successful DJ's I know is Bassnectar, and he's been wearing the same clothes since high school卆nd I doubt he's ever had a haircut.

What抯 your favorite way to style your hair? What抯 the sexiest way a girl can wear her hair?
Every few years I grow my hair out pretty long梚t's my favorite look. It gets annoying to deal with, though. I like when girls make their hair look big卨ike, huge bouncy curls!

How do you prepare for a gig?
I like to go out into the crowd during the opening act and dance around and get pumped up.

What抯 the best show you ever played and why?
Wow, that's a tough one. There's a festival in Arkansas called Wakarusa, and about a year and a half ago, I play a really late night DJ set there. It was so late that the sun started coming up and I could see the whole crowd卛t was amazing.

What抯 the best part about being on tour? The worst?
Traveling and seeing the world and meeting all kinds of people.

Tell us something that people would be surprised to know about you.
I used to have dreads.

Tell us about any exciting upcoming projects. What抯 next for Eliot Lipp?
I'm getting ready to release a bunch of remixes of songs from my last album. I'm also going back out on tour in November with Pretty Lights for some East Coast dates.
