Summer Hair Tips, Tricks and Essentials

Summer calls for easy, effortless hair, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on of your healthy hair care routine. In fact, more time in the sun—and more trips to the pool and beach—can leave hair thirsting for even more TLC. And don’t let the humidity or mid-afternoon rain showers discourage you from styling your hair, as you can easily achieve a new look despite the rising temps. From the best products to protect your hair against summer sizzle to easy ways to get beachy waves, read on to find out a few of our Oribe educators’ favorite tips, tricks and essentials for the season.

1. Summer calls for serum…

“I try to get every client to understand the importance of using a serum no matter the length of your hair or color routine. Adding something restorative like Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil then wearing your hair in a top knot or bun for the day will help mend dry, processed ends.”—Coby Alcantar, Oribe Educator

2. …and keratin, too.

Supershine Moisturizing Cream has keratin in it, so it’s great for getting rid of frizz and repairing brittle ends. It’s actually gained a lot of popularity in my salon because of that benefit. If you have less dense hair, go for Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream, and if you need extra taming, try Smooth Style Serum, which manages frizz and seals split ends. These products are great to use on their own if you want summer hair that’s soft and natural without being too fluffy.”—Coby

3. Create beachy waves in your sleep.

“There are so many ways to create beachy hair. One of the easiest is to wash your hair before bed and set it with some product—Foundation Mist all over the hair, and Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil or Supershine Moisturizing Cream from roots to ends. Twist your hair into loose buns, securing with two bobby pins crisscrossed at the base of each. I tell my clients to create buns following the pattern of a five-sided rolling dice: one at the crown, two on each side and two in the back. In the morning, blow-dry and hand-diffuse each bun if it’s still damp. Then stretch out the hair for long, easy waves. Finish with a little Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray to define the texture.”—Coby

4. A summer (and men’s) favorite: Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse.

Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse is one of my favorite products for summer. The best way to use it is on damp or wet hair. Using your fingers, rake the product through your hair and then diffuse-dry or let air-dry. Surfcomber is like pomade in a can, so it’s a great product for men, too. Dispense a golf ball-size amount in your hands and slick your hair back.”—Adam Livermore, Oribe Educator

5. A simple, day-to-night summer hairdo.

“For hot summer days, blow-dry your hair until it’s about 90-percent dry. Apply Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream and a little Crème for Style, then put it up into a top knot. Use Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray for any flyaways. At the end of the day, let your hair down—the result is completely amazing waves.”—Adam

6. Protect your hair before you dip in.

“Saltwater can take out the keratin and color in your hair. And if there’s copper (not chlorine) deposits in a pool, it can make blonde hair turn green. In order to prevent your hair from getting damaged, protect it with a physical barrier. Before you go into the ocean or pool, wet your hair down with tap water, comb through with Conditioner for Brilliance & Shine, slick your hair into a bun and jump in.”—Adam

7. Get a new a look.

“Don’t wait until fall to try a new look. You can get a fresh hairstyle for the summer, too. Look at photos from summers past and approach your hairdresser for a versatile haircut that’s different from your usual cut and style.”—Ronnie Stam, Oribe Global Creative Director

8. Quench your hair’s thirst.

“Constant summer sunlight will dry out your hair. If you’re going to do a casual look for the daytime, like a ponytail or bun, add in product that will help retain your hair’s moisture. I suggest Balm d’Or Heat Styling Shield, Split End Seal, Supershine Moisturizing Cream, Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil or Curl by Definition.”—Ronnie

9. Wear your hair up at night.

“When you go out at night, it’s usually custom to wear your hair down and blown-out. But don’t be afraid to wear it up, especially since summer brings hot and humid temperatures. Look through magazines for inspiration and try different pulled-back styles. Use Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray for a light hold and finish with Smooth Style Serum.”—Ronnie

10. Masques are a must.

“Masques are a must for summer! I always tell my clients to apply a masque (try Signature Moisture Masque, Masque for Beautiful Color, or Gold Lust Transformative Masque) when you have the time. Be sure to leave it on for about 10 minutes.”—Ronnie
