"Joan Smalls"

Self, October 2014
Hair by Jennifer Yepez

Supermodel Joan Smalls graces the October cover of
Self in a shoot by photographer Patrick Demarchelier. Smalls’ go-to hairstylist Jennifer Yepez was inspired by the model’s well-received look from the 2014 Met Gala in May. “Many people were enamored by it,” she said. “I’m very happy that people could relate to the look and want to recreate it at home.” For the women’s fitness magazine, Yepez revamped the red carpet braid into something more simple and with a bit of texture. “We wanted a look that was realistic and what a girl would wear to the gym,” she explained.

If you’re looking to add more length and volume to your braid, Yepez suggests placing clip-in hair extensions at the nape of your neck. She also noted that lightly teasing the sections of the braid before braiding will instantly create more texture. Get the Look:
1. Apply Maximista Thickening Spray from roots to ends. Blow-dry section by section with a large round brush.
2. Create a side part and use a 1 ¼-inch curling iron to slightly bend the front layer of hair that frames the face for texture and grip.
3. Use Dry Texturizing Spray all over the bottom half of the hair.
4. Sweep the hair to the opposite side of the part and start making a basic or fishtail braid. Finish the braid with an elastic.
5. Lightly pull on each section of the braid to loosen and create the illusion of a thicker, fuller braid.
6. Finish the look with Thick Dry Finishing Spray.
