Oribe at NYFW Spring/Summer 2018

Oribe’s unrivaled team of stylists created nothing short of hair envy during the NYFW Spring/Summer 2018 season. Each presentation—whether held outdoors in the elements or as a more traditional runway show—complemented the designer’s vision by using a variety of innovative techniques and carefully curated Oribe products.

Cinq à Sept
Hair by Kien Hoang

In French “Cinq à Sept” describes the hours between evening and night when city streets are flooded with the fading light of the sun. To capture the spirit of this phenomena and the designer’s overtly feminine textures and patterns of the Spring/Summer 2018 collection, Kien Hoang, Oribe Director of Training & Content, styled ethereal and fantastical looking hair, which included cool waves with natural body and straight ends.

Get the Look:

  1. Prep hair with Foundation Mist.
  2. Apply Maximista Thickening Spray from roots to ends,
  3.  Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream to the ends and Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse to the roots.
  4. Once previous product is applied, work Rough Luxury Molding Wax into hair.
  5. Curl hair in alternate curling directions—towards the face and away from the face.
  6. Twist hair into a loose knot and secure with a large hairpin to dry.
  7. Release the knot and comb through with Swept Up Volume Powder Spray.
  8. Finish with Dry Texturizing Spray

Chromat
Hair by Kien Hoang

Chromat kept true to their aesthetic this season, creating a Spring/Summer 2018 collection inspired by the overall theme of serenity, including elements such as rocks, lava and volcanoes. To accompany the collection, Kien Hoang, Oribe Director of Training & Content, created two looks. The first, a naturally textured look where Kien and the Oribe Team enhanced each model’s curl pattern using a Marcel iron and pick comb, represented the essence of tranquility, while the second, a twisted, coiled style with braids front and center, symbolized pressure and eruption.

Get the Look (Braided):

  1. Prep hair with Foundation Mist and Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray and brush through.
  2. Flatiron hair and split into three sections.
  3. Create cornrow braids starting at the crown and moving toward the face.
  4. Section off a thin “pie-slice” on each side of the head from the crown to the hairline and add to the braid until ear level. Be sure to spray each “slice” softly with  Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray.
  5. Continue braiding to chin level and secure.
  6. Loosen the braid and adding Thick Dry Finishing Spray for fuzzy texture.
  7. Brush the rest of hair into a mid-height ponytail directly above the occipital bone.
  8. Secure with an elastic cord and finish with  Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray.

Brandon Maxwell
Hair by James Pecis

This season, Brandon Maxwell paid homage to the strength and conviction of the women who have opened doors for others with bold colors, tailored tops, flowy skirts and an array of textures and necklines. James Pecis used Oribe Hair Care to create beautiful, fresh looks meant to enhance and celebrate each model’s individual hair type. The styles, which for the most part were tousled and textured, had a final look that felt expensive and clean.

Get the Look:

  1. Prep hair with Maximista Thickening Spray at the roots.
  2. Blow dry hair to a smooth finish.
  3. Using a 1.5-inch curling iron, create easy “S” waves in the hair, alternating sections to create a bend and texture.
  4. If needed, use a blow dryer to break up the bends and waves.
  5. Finish with Swept Up Volume Powder Spray to add fuzz and texture to the hair.

Rochambeau
Hair by Joey George

Skate culture and the contemporary art scene inspired designers Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper to create their label, Rochambeau. For their Spring/Summer 2018 collection, Chandler and Cooper turned to artist and sculptor, Aaron Curry, whose prints and colors can be seen coming down the runway. Oribe Educator Joey George complemented the art-driven collection and created hairstyles representative of the unique art school student. Some models sported clean, smooth styles, while others were given distinctive haircuts mimicking the comic-book aesthetic of Curry’s work.

Get the Look:

  1. Create a strong center part.
  2. Prep all hair types with Maximista Thickening Spray and Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse from roots to mid-lengths.
  3. For finer hair, apply Featherbalm Weightless Styler to the mid-lengths and ends and let air-dry.
  4. For resilient hair, layer Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray and Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream and blow dry.
  5. For curly hair, use Curl Control Silkening Crème on damp hair and diffuse.
  6. Finish with Superfine Hair Spray.

Derek Lam
Hair by James Pecis

Derek Lam's Spring/Summer 2018 show was inspired by a '70s desert safari in today’s world. The rich colors and sophisticated patterns of the collection were enriched by Oribe Global Ambassador James Pecis' fresh, light style with movement. The understated look had an easiness to it that struck a balance between undone and polished.

Get the Look:

  1. Saturate hair with Maximista Thickening Spray (concentrating on the roots) and blow dry.
  2. Create a natural center part and over direct the hair back to keep the sides flat against the head.
  3. From the ears back, use a 1.5-inch curling iron to create an easy “S” wave.
  4. Apply Featherbalm Weightless Styler at the ends for extra polish.

Baja East
Hair by James Pecis

Baja East designers, Scott Studenberg and John Targon, are known for their relaxed silhouettes and rich fabrics and their Spring/Summer 2018 pieces kept in line with their highly sought-after signature style. The outside runway show captured the essence of ready-to-wear, and Oribe Global Ambassador James Pecis created two hairstyles that served as a nod to the ’90s featuring strong, angular lines and clean shapes with minimalistic undertones.

Get the Look (Geometric Pony):

  1. Section a deep, diagonal side part from right to left towards the ear. Pin this section and set aside.
  2. With the remaining hair, spray roots with Maximista Thickening Spray and sculpt into a low, smooth ponytail.
  3. Drop the previous section, keeping hair to the right and exposing the partings. Connect this section to the ponytail.
  4. Use Star Glow Styling Wax to clean up edges.
  5. Flat iron the length of the ponytail and finish with a touch of Featherbalm Weightless Styler.

Get the Look (Textured Back):

  1. Spray Maximista Thickening Spray throughout the hair, concentrating on the roots from the ears forward.
  2. Use a styling brush to blow dry hair away from the face, keeping height and volume near the top.
  3. Warm-up Star Glow Styling Wax in hands and distribute through hair for weight and shine.

The Blonds
Hair by Kien Hoang

The Blonds Spring/Summer 2018 collection was inspired by the intersection of music and life, specifically Elvis Presley, Prince, Grace Jones and the musicians of the late '70s and '80s. Kien Hoang, Oribe Director of Training & Content, created a wet, ultra-glossy hairstyle to complement the over-the-top outfits. The natural texture of each model’s hair was embraced and enhanced with a cocktail of Oribe oils that made the girls look as if they had just taken a dip in the pool.

Get the Look:

  1. Saturate hair with Run-Through Detangling Primer from roots to ends to add moisture and prep hair for styling.
  2. Emulsify Gold Lust Pre-Shampoo Intensive Treatment by rubbing between palms. Finger-rake the product through the hair, beginning at the crown and moving down toward the ends.
  3. Follow with Curl Gloss Hydration & Hold and Côte d’Azur Luminous Hair & Body Oil for added shine and separation.
  4. Diffuse hair at the top to create lift at the crown.
  5. Apply Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray for heat protection before tapping a flatiron down strands to create a piecey texture.
  6. Use fingers to mold hair back away from the face, leaving pieces out to frame the face. Tuck hair behind the ear on one side, anchoring it in place with a red hibiscus flower.
  7. Mist the flower with Côte d’Azur Luminous Hair & Body Oil for a wet and shiny finished look.
