Hair by Danilo

Rocker and designer Gwen Stefani was inspired by a photo from the ‘60s for her Fall 2012 collection, and lead hairstylist Danilo carried that theme through to the sky-high bouffant he created for the hair. “The look was essentially rockabilly meets Diane Arbus images,” Danilo said. “She’s a cool chick who pulled herself together in the morning. It has a do-it-yourself element to it, like she threw it up before walking out the door.” Danilo credits Dry Texturizing Spray with allowing him to achieve the exact look he was going for. “Dry helped me build and sculpt the hair and gave it what I call a ‘lifestyle’ vibe,” he explained. “It had the appearance of being day-old hair but it was fresh and moveable.”

How to get the retro style:
1. Set the hair on the top of the head in large hot rollers to create volume at the crown.
2. Once the rollers have been removed and the hair has cooled, spray Dry throughout the hair and use Danilo’s French Lacing technique, which involves back-combing the hair with a brush rather than a comb.
3. Create a low side part and pull hair back, pinning it into a bouffant shape by folding the hair over itself. Danilo left the pins visible to enhance the “do-it-yourself” feel.
4. Spray on more Dry to finish the look.
