Jennifer Fisher

Originally a wardrobe stylist for films, commercials and television, Jennifer Fisher’s foray into jewelry design was sudden and serendipitous. After a few unsuccessful shopping trips, Fisher decided to create a necklace on her own that best fit her style: a simple, long chain with a pendant tag stamped with her son Shane’s name. Eventually the requests for her designs were enough to start her namesake line in 2005. Since then, Fisher’s collections have been recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and are spotted around the world, from New York to Japan, on loyal fans and red carpet regulars, including Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts.

In between her busy schedule and upcoming summer plans, we spoke with the New York-based designer about her creative process, how to find your own jewelry style and what pieces to wear this season.

Your jewelry line started with you creating a necklace that represented you and your son. Were your mother and grandmother into jewelry as well?

My grandmother was much more into jewelry than my mother is. My grandmother was more eccentric in her personal style, and my mother is much more classic. I guess I take after both in a way.

What's your creative process like? Where do you find your inspiration?

It’s actually so haphazard. I make pieces I would like to wear and hope others feel the same. I’m inspired by everything—the city, my family, photography, even the people who work with me.

Your jewelry is everywhere! What's the most exciting time you've seen your jewelry worn?

Definitely the most exciting moment was when Rihanna walked into my showroom wanting to meet me after wearing my jewelry for so long (it had been pulled by her stylist, Mel Ottenberg). It never connected it was mine until a friend of hers from home, stylist Carmen Lilly, who I actually know, pointed it out. Seeing Rihanna in her personal jewelry from me is always a huge highlight, especially in the way she styles it.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

My design aesthetic is clean utilitarian. I love pieces to seamlessly go from day to night, season to season.

What are your most popular designs?

Our signature dog tags and charm necklaces are very popular, as well as our custom diamond burnished cuffs where people choose personal dates, monograms and family equations. From the diffusion line, the bolder bone and vertebrae pieces and the chokers are very popular.

Your signature style is stacking on jewelry. Do you have any tips on how someone can find their own signature jewelry look?

I always recommend that people just make it their own. Some layer light and delicate, others pile it on and mix metal colors. Don't try to be what you are not.

What type of jewelry should every woman be wearing this summer?

This summer is all about the simple choker, skinny gold chain or body chain.

If you had your own salon, what type of jewelry would you want the hair stylists to wear?

I’m very close with my two hairstylists, and they each wear pieces from the collection in a different way—one more light and personal and the other more edgy. I love both looks! People should each wear it differently, as they are different individuals. Jewelry should be your personal armor and never the same from person to person.

What kinds of hairstyles best complement and show off your jewelry?

I have been wearing a classic pony or bun lately to show off our new ear crawler earrings and chokers.

What's your beauty routine like?

My beauty routine is very simple: Oribe Signature Shampoo (always) and I blow-dry my hair straight myself. I do a keratin treatment once or twice a year to help with the frizz. For skincare, I swear by Joanna Vargas facials, her LED-light bed and all of her products. And my Clarisonic—can’t live without it.

We read that you love to cook. What's the latest dish you’ve made?

I’ve been eating vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free lately and juicing a lot, which is making me feel great. Last night I made a simple sauté of fresh wild mushrooms and a simple classic tomato sauce with some fresh basil to serve over them. It was very meaty and filling without feeling the weight of a heavy meat sauce.

Is there anything you're currently into right now?

We all are big Food Network fans in my house as my kids are obsessed with Chopped. (Our old neighbor Marc Murphy is a judge so the kids love seeing him in action.) We play Chopped with the kids sometimes; it’s really fun making scary random concoctions. My husband and I also love Man vs. Wild or anything on the National Geographic Channel. And when I totally zone out after my husband goes to sleep (he refuses to watch) it’s always Real Housewives in some form. (Can't believe I just admitted this!)

Being a busy mom, how do you manage your time between work, home and family? Do you have any fun tips or regular rituals you'd like to share?

It’s so hard to balance. I always take them to school every day. It’s our routine to be together in the mornings, as I unfortunately cannot be there to pick them up as much as I would like. When I get home, I try to not be on my phone when I’m with the kids. We also have special lunch dates. I take them out separately from school to lunch in the neighborhood so we have some private time together. My husband and I try to go on a date once a week at least to stay connected. We all do the best we can!

Do you have any summer plans you're looking forward to?

I am planning to go to Europe with my husband in the beginning of July while the kids are at camp. We will also head to Aspen for a family wedding, which I'm really looking forward to. It will be nice to get out of the humidity and hike a bit. But, this summer is really all about moving and settling into our new Fifth Avenue flagship location in New York City, between 17th and 18th streets in the Flatiron District.
