Heavy Metal

Start the spring season with healthy, beautiful hair by treating your tresses with Oribe’s newest product innovation, Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil. In honor of our inaugural oil launch, we asked four of our favorite jewelry and accessory designers for their philosophy on the precious metal, their top gilded picks and what to rock them with this season.

This week, we’re featuring multi-talented designer Bliss Lau. Lau launched her first handbag collection immediately after graduating from Parsons School of Design. Four years later she transitioned the collection into the architectural body jewelry she is known for today. The inspiration behind Bliss’s designs range from the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii, where she grew up, to the iconic architecture of New York City.

What draws you to designing jewelry?

Jewelry, unlike any other form of design, allows you to create wearable art objects. I love the challenge and freedom involved with creating something from a liquid into a solid that will be treasured far past my lifetime.

What are your top three must-have gold pieces from your collection? Why?

The FATHOM ring was my first design in gold. Only 11 of these limited-edition pieces were created…and they all sold out. It was the first in a series of five pieces inspired by Ariel’s song “Full Fathom Five” from Shakespeare's The Tempest. I am now launching the FATHOM II, a two-part ring made of 14 carat rose gold set with smoky quartz and surrounded by a sterling silver band with blue sapphires. Again, only 11 of these limited-edition pieces will be created.

The Vivid Necklace in 14-carat white gold is also exceptional! It is a twin piece neck cuff hung from a suspended featherweight chain.

Lastly, I love the white gold Isolation Cuff with an oversized black onyx, from my MORNINGNOONNIGHT collection inspired by Robert Wilson's Einstein's On The Beach and the transformation from day into night.

What jewelry trends are you most excited about this spring?

I love the idea of wearing jewelry in unexpected places… like the trend of wearing rings at the tips of your fingers, oversized cuffs, earrings that surround the ear and of course, body chains!

What do you suggest wearing gold accessories with?

I love gold accessories with neutral tonal or analogous colors that have a variety of textures and volume.

What sets gold apart from other metals in your eyes?

As a jeweler, I love that gold is a soft, thus a forgiving and kind, metal to work with.

In your opinion, why does wearing gold make people feel so special?

It is the superior metal, worn by emperors and queens. I think the experience of wearing gold evokes a special energy and experience in each person.

How would the Bliss Lau customer wear their hair on a date?

The Bliss Lau customer would change her hair on every date—no two styles ever the same. On the first date she would have her hair up, partially braided with volume in the front…prim, buttoned up and elegant. On the second date she would let her hair partially down to give her a little swing in her step. On the third date she would leave her hair completely down…but curled just at the tip.
