DJ Irie

The two-time NBA Champion Miami Heat are a world-class team with all-star players, so it’s no surprise that they have one of the best DJs in the business pumping up their crowds of devoted fans nightly. DJ Irie, the NBA’s first official DJ, is the man behind the music for the Heat, mixing chart-topping hits with Latin tunes for a sound that is pure Miami. In our latest installment of our Made in Miami series, DJ Irie breaks down his favorite hotspots for music, food and partying, and gives us a sampling of a few of his favorite beats.

You are the NBA’s first DJ. Do you play basketball?

If you can call it that! I stand here the owner of two NBA World Championship rings and I can barely dribble a basketball…much less shoot. So, no, I can’t really say I “play” basketball, but I sure can watch really well!

Which Miami Heat player has the best song when they come out onto the court? What song would you come out to?

All of the guys have great taste in music, and I actually discover a lot of my new tunes from them. I would probably come out to Drake’s “Started from The Bottom” because if I were ever to take the floor of an NBA game, I would literally be starting from the bottom.

What song gets the crowd going?

Apache – Sugarhill Gang
Don’t Stop The Party – Pitbull featuring TJR
Party Rock Anthem – LMFAO
Good Feeling – Flo Rida
Jump Around – House of Pain

How would you describe the Miami music scene? What’s unique about it?

The Miami music scene is eclectic and cutting edge. The fact that it’s one of the nightlife capitals of the world and many of today’s most notable and internationally renowned artists come from and make their music right here in Miami is very inspirational. What’s most unique is Miami’s diversity. There’s such an amazing mix of culture and artistry that it’s one of the few places where you can experience multiple genres of music in their authenticity within a small radius.

If you were the in-house DJ for a hair salon, how would you set the musical mood? What would you spin? Where should salon owners go for musical inspiration?

I’d play the soundtrack to Hairspray on repeat all day long! Salon owners should check the trends on Spotify and music blogs like Salon patrons are a captive audience for extended periods of time. Why not let them discover new great music while having their hair done?

What’s your hair and grooming regimen?

Cut it, wash it, wear it!
