Dallas Shaw

When Dallas Shaw’s first drawing teacher instructed the class to put pencil to paper and doddle a horse, the result was a lot of circles and rudimentary stick figures, except for one. Dallas, who was early into her elementary school career, drew a detailed color carousel that housed three-dimensional horses. “This is where the adventure began,” said Dallas. “I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. My parents and teachers noticed my talent and encouraged it when I was young.”

The illustrator, designer and soon-to-be author who began her artistic journey in her hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and prefers to work in the medium of watercolor, became a trusted tastemaker—she has more than 75K Instagram followers—through hard work and authenticity. “I only take on projects that I love,” said Dallas. “Eventually people began to see my style, understand my creative voice and trust me.” And those who trust her stylish direction read like a who’s who of fashion and design: Chanel, Donna Karan, Louboutin, Oscar de la Renta, Fresh and Ralph Lauren.

Between book shoots and sketch sessions, we caught up with Dallas, a current resident of Delaware with her husband and two pups, to discuss the things she can’t live without, her new creative endeavor as an author and, of course, her Oribe obsessions.

You mention on your blog that personal style is important in becoming your own brand. How would you describe your personal style?
I’m a mix of a lot of things. I like basics paired with a bit of glam and masculine paired with feminine.

Why is it crucial to surround yourself with beautiful things every day?
As a visual person I couldn’t live without this. It would be hard to keep the inspiration constant.

What are some of those things that you currently can’t live without?
I am so inspired by my creative friends; they keep me driven and challenged. In terms of product, I like small luxuries like candles, shampoo and perfumes…and shoes—obviously shoes.

Do you have a favorite project that you are working on?
I’m working on my first book right now! It’s been the most amazing project so far because I’m working with so many different designers and beauty brands.

Your studio looks like every career woman’s dream workspace. Did you design it?
Yes! I designed it and I’m always redesigning it. My favorite piece in that room is the desk that I got from—wait for it—IKEA. It’s an amazing glass top on white horse legs, and I get emails about it weekly. Unfortunately, they don’t make it any more.

You have more than 75K Instagram followers. How did you build such a following and why is your audience interested in the content you post?
I love connecting with followers through that channel. Most of the people who follow me on Instagram have amazing taste. It’s a wonderful form of support, so I hope they are following because they genuinely like my work.

What are the top five Instagram or Pinterest accounts everyone should be following right now?
I like following other creatives like @marissawebb (Marissa Web), @sincerelyjules (Julie Sariñana), @lesnereidesparis (Les Néréides) and @mrselfportrait (Han Chong) on Instagram as well as Crush Cul de Sac on Pinterest.

In your opinion, what is one fashion statement that will never go out of style?
Your favorite white tee.

Your full-color stylebook is launching in Spring 2017. What can we expect to see within its pages?
The book is a visual guide to finding your own personal style. It’s full of ideas and fashion prompts that will keep you inspired by the items in your own closet. By the end of the book you should feel 100 percent confident in a style that is your own.

What inspires you?
The entire lifestyle industry and people with creative drive.

Do you have a favorite color?
Pink. Typical.

Do you have a favorite everyday outfit?
If I’m painting, I’m a ripped jeans and tee-shirt girl, but when the whether permits I live in a sundress and messy beach wave.

What is your favorite thing to illustrate in your free time?
My newest obsession is taking on design collaborations. There is nothing like sketching a product with designers and bringing them to life.

What is your favorite Oribe product and how do you use it?
I use Dry Texturizing Spray for touch-ups throughout the day. I love a messy wave and this product gives the best texture. I also love the Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray on the days when I want a messy style and my blond is looking like it needs a touch of shine.
