"Bird of Paradise"

C Magazine, Summer 2014
Hair by Nikki Providence

Shot at the famous glass-paneled Sheats-Goldstein Residence in Los Angeles, “Bird of Paradise” showcased the modern-design home’s lush, tropical landscaping. “It’s an incredible environment for bright colors,” noted hairstylist Nikki Providence. “I wanted to work with summer’s hot, humid feeling and create a girl that is luxuriating during the season.”

Providence played with two voluminous hairstyles for model Frida Gustavsson. “Frida has tons of hair,” said Providence. “And I was happy to have so much to work with to create the looks. Tying it up with a scarf is the way to be comfortable and chic in this summer weather.”

Get the Updo Look:
1. Generously spray Maximista Thickening Spray throughout the entire head of hair. At high heat and speed, roughly dry the hair, without a brush or a nozzle on the dryer, until the product is broken down completely to create a lot of volume.
2. Use a one-inch curling iron and set the entire head, clipping each section.
3. After the hair is cool, remove clips and brush hair out completely with a Mason Pearson brush.
4. Use your hands and an elastic to tie the hair into a top knot. “Keep the elastic at a slight distance from the head so it keeps the top knot’s shape from being tight anywhere,” tipped Providence.
5. After styling the updo with a scarf, allow pieces of the hair to fall out. Use Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil on the tips of the hair around the face. This will mimic the humidity throughout the shoot.

Get the Down-Style Look:
1. Take out the top knot and brush the hair with a Mason Pearson brush.
2. Apply Dry Texturizing Spray.
3. Using your fingers, a back-combing brush and Superfine Hair Spray, create volume in the fringe and at the part. “Don’t forget to tuck a flower behind the ear!” added Providence.
