Alberto Guzman

Alberto Guzman traces his passion for hairstyling back to his mother. As a child in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Alberto would watch her carefully coif herself – and in the process, learned that hair has the power to transform. That fascination led him out of Puerto Rico and straight to New York City, where he built a celebrated career that’s seen him train with John Sahag, style for Vogue and travel the world as Pink’s hairstylist – just to name a few highlights.

Here, the man who’s styled Christina Aguilera, Tyra Banks, Gwyneth Paltrow and more tells us what he’s learned during his 25-plus years of hairdressing.

Did you always want to work in the hair industry?

I did from a very young age. My mother was a makeup artist who inspired me from childhood.

Was there ever a moment in your career where you thought, “Now I’ve really made it”?

When I was traveling with a celebrity, I felt on top of the world. That said, it’s important to always challenge myself and never get complacent.

How is working with models different from working with a celebrity?

When working with a celebrity, they become the focus of the shoot. They are, essentially, the boss on-set.

Most memorable celebrity experience?

Traveling the world with Pink.

Any celebrity you think could use a hair makeover?

Every celebrity has their own aesthetic, and it’s my job to add to that and help them find their hair personality. I approach everyone with an open mind.

Describe your personal aesthetic for hair.

Polished rock ‘n’ roll. It brings together the structured look and adds flair.

Any hair icons?

Actually, Oribe was my first industry role model. He inspired to me to become a hairstylist for photo shoots.

What are your favorite Oribe products?

Superfine Hair Spray and Dry Texturizing Spray.

Any must-have tools or products you think every stylist should have?

A dry shampoo, a good hairspray and a good teasing brush.

What’s one thing you know now that you wish you had known when you started your career?

How to deal with people and big personalities.
