Oribe at NYFW: Men’s Spring/Summer 2017

Oribe Educators worked with their talented network of stylists to cultivate 14 looks presented by designers at the second annual NYFW: Men’s. The presentation of Spring/Summer 2017 was an expression of vibrant fashion and revolutionary hair.

CADET
Hair by Nathan Nguyen

Cadet reinterpreted the Roman military for the modern guy in their spring collection—replicating images of Roman Legions, such as gladiators and emperors, but giving them a confident, urban edge. Nathan complimented this hint of history with strong, shiny hair.

Get the Look:

  1. Apply Foundation Mist throughout the hair, creating damp but not overly saturated texture.
  2. Use a comb to sculpt the hair to desired texture.
  3. Diffuse the hair and allow to dry.
  4. Apply Fiber Groom Elastic Texture Paste to organically mold the hair and enhance the natural texture.
  5. Lightly mist the fringe area with Cotê d’Azur Hair & Body Oil to create shine.

CHAPTER
Hair by Christian Ceja-Compin

Examining a place where form and disarray meet in balance and harmony, Chapter’s collection was inspired by '90s culture and the cinematography of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. Christian masterfully paired the refined collection with romantic Romeo hair.

Get the Look:

  1. Begin by spraying Foundation Mist all over.
  2. Apply Matte Waves Texture Lotion and then flatiron to create a small bend.
  3. Finished with Dry Texturizing Spray.

DAVID HART
Hair by Kien Hoang

This year, David Hart presented a more youthful take on his usual thematic presentation and tailored clothes. David drew inspiration from the bright palette of the ‘70s and the West Coast surf culture of the ‘60s. Lead hairstylist Kien, who has been working with the designer for seven seasons, kept the hair slightly greasy, for a beachy bedhead. Kien left the diverse cast, featuring afros and long hair, looking like they’ve lived on the beach for a week.

Get the Look:

  1. Enhance natural textures with Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream mixed with Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil.
  2. Use fingers to style natural waves.
  3. Spray Dry Texturizing Spray to set the roots.
  4. Place final touches using Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray to create a lived-in look.

David Hart X Hart Schaffner Marx (HSM)
Hair by Kien Hoang

In a special David Hart-Hart Schaffner & Marx collaboration, the designer along with the 130-year-old tailored menswear company achieved an aristocratic, polished gentleman's collection for their spring/summer 2017 presentation. Kien—who envisioned this style worn by the type of man who takes the time to get every hair perfectly in place—styled a pulled-back coif for a seamless pairing with the upscale garments.

Get the Look:

  1. Prep with Foundation Mist.
  2. Apply Rough Luxury Molding Wax and blow dry.
  3. Use a flat iron to lightly smooth the hair.

DAVID NAMAN
Hair by Christian Ceja-Compin

KRAMMER + STOUDT
Hair by Louis Orozco

This modern and diverse collection was inspired by the '60s California clash between the surfers and the cholos. Krammer + Stoudt kept their signature Americana style while bringing to life a strong Latin influence. To compliment the collection, Louis created a look that wasn’t too wet, but instead had a drier, dirtier look.

  1. Apply generous amounts of Dry Texturizing Spray at the root .
  2. Spray Après Beach Wave and Shine Light Reflecting Spray on the ends.
  3. Combine Rock Hard Gel and Maximista Thickening Spray along the top of the hair.
  4. Use fingers to style.

MAIDEN NOIR
Hair by Mandee Hernandez

Maiden Noir redefined the modern men’s wear uniform in this season’s presentation. Inspired by ’40s and ‘50s military work wear, Georgia O’Keefe’s landscape paintings served as the main color references for the collection. Mandee channeled Marlon Brando and Bob Dylan for a relaxed greaser look with a matte finish.

Hair by Dan Nguyen

Designer Peter Trainor successfully created a look that gives “the vibe of feeling comfortable 24/7 with a worn in look.” Transporting everyone to the ideal beach vacation, Max n' Chester's Spring/Summer 2017 collection was inspired by Cuba’s casual elegance and tropical, modern culture. Dan matched this laid-back style with an easy textured curl.

PLAC
Hair by Nathan Nguyen

Plac, a brand based in South Korea, has built a huge American following since their debut on the New York Men’s circuit two years ago. For the spring collection, designer Jae Wan Park created “a gentleman’s summer wardrobe” that was influenced by ‘60s silhouettes. Nathan referenced American painter David Hockney and Jack Kerouac to create a more modern, beatnik, bohemian style.

  5. Finish the hair with Soft Dry Conditioner Spray to soften the ends.

PRIVATE POLICY
Hair by Kien Hoang

Radical designer Private Policy pushed boundaries at Men’s Day this year. The collection, inspired by the horrors of slave labor in the Southeast Asia fishing industry, was a myriad of color, texture, pattern and silhouette. Kien fulfilled the brand’s call “for freedom for all” by sculpting a “Rebel Warriors from the Sea” style that mimicked the sharp, pointed scales of a fish.

Get the Look:

  1. Begin by applying Volumista Mist for Volume and Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse and back comb.
  2. Tie off certain sections of hair with electric cord while folding and combing the rest of the hair back to enhance different grains on top of the head.

  5. Flatiron, pulling the hair outward, and finish with Star Glow Styling Wax.

RIDEAU
Hair by Nathan Nguyen

Rideau Designer Dylan Granger left viewers wanting more with a collection that included only eight looks. Influenced by the summer vibe of a Malibu sunset, pieces include shorts, elongated hooded sweatshirts, and suede biker jackets. ROBERT JAMES
Hair by Davide Marinelli

Robert James, a brand founded on timeless, handsome classics with a modern twist, continued to balance innovation and inspiration with a Spring/ Summer collection that pulled from the look of a Lower East Side modern hipster with a slight rock and roll edge. Davide complemented this duality by using natural textures to create gritty, masculine, hip hair.

URI MINKOFF
Hair by Dan Nguyen

Uri Minkoff slowed down time with a collection that was influenced by the laid-back life of Como, Italy. Dancers moved in slow motion to model the lineup, allowing the sport-inspired details of the line to show through the presentation’s languid choreography. Dan paired the late-‘90s-retro feel with a style that was neat and considerate.

  1. Start with Foundation Mist
  2. Apply Matte Waves Texture Lotion section by section through the hair.
